ADVOCACY & ISSUES

Advocacy is our Responsibility
Our legislators look to both their constituents, as well as those with special expertise, to inform them about how legislation will impact the lives of Hoosiers in need.  It’s up to us to provide them with the necessary information related to protecting human services in Indiana.  You don’t need to be an expert on an issue to be an effective advocate, and there’s no reason to be nervous or intimidated about contacting your legislator.

Our legislators need to hear from their constituents in order to know how we feel!  They are neither mind-readers nor experts on all issues!  They really do look to us for reliable information about how legislation will affect the lives of Hoosiers in need.  Therefore, we have a responsibility to share our experiences and expertise so that our legislators are better equipped to protect and enhance human services in Indiana.  It only takes a minute to place a call or send an email.

A Few Interesting Statistics
•
State legislators say it only takes an average of 12 letters or phone calls to get their attention on an issue.
•
On average, an advocate only needs 5 to 12 legislators backing an issue to pass a bill out of committee or kill it.
•
This means that your single phone call, letter, or email really can make a difference!
