LAFAYETTE URBAN MINISTRY-LUM

Touching the future by helping children and families today

The Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM) is a non-profit ecumenical organization which provides assistance and relief to Lafayette's needy children and families. For over 30 years, LUM has worked to give back the hope, the future, and the self-respect to low-income people in the Greater Lafayette area. We take an active role in trying to change social injustices and improve the quality of life for the poor of Indiana.

LUM is a partnership of 47 congregations from 21 faith traditions working together to bring compassion and justice to Lafayette's needy children and families. LUM serves the community through 23 assistance programs and is a model for urban ministry in other regions.

Programs include:
Homeless shelter. The LUM shelter provides short-term overnight shelter, meals, and showers in a safe and caring environment to homeless individuals. It may accommodate up to 46 adults each night of the year.

Emergency Financial Assistance. LUM’s Emergency Assistance Program provides emergency rent, utility, and prescription medication assistance.

Social Justice Ministries. In addition to providing vital concrete services, LUM also works to build a more just society through research, public education, and legislative advocacy. Through the Campaign for Hoosier Families, an alliance of faith-based organizations in support of Indiana’s children and families, LUM impacts federal and state legislation.

Food Pantry. The pantry provides emergency food to nearly 2,000 individuals each month.

Afterschool Program. The LUM Afterschool Program provides educational enrichment for children of LUM’s clients, enabling parents to finish their afternoon work knowing their children are in a safe, stimulating environment.

LUM's Mission Statement

Poverty is the greatest thief. More than depriving a neighbor of food or shelter or warmth, it steals away hope. While other thieves may take away the past, poverty steals the future and self-respect.

The Lafayette Urban Ministry is in the business of restoring human dignity. Through voluntary efforts and contributions we give back the hope, the future, the self-respect, which all God's people need and deserve.
